Communicating the case for renewable energy

|

Blackwood has been involved in communication and design within the renewable energy sector since 2011. With the deadline to become net zero getting ever closer, we take a look at how renewable energy can help decarbonise up to 90% of the global energy supply by 2050.

Non-renewable energy sources have catalysed anthropogenic climate change to a level that is now close to irrevocable. The deadline to become net zero is getting ever closer- this is now required by 2050 at the latest. While an uncertain future lies ahead, the role of renewable energy is paramount to ensuring the longevity of a prosperous environment, which in turn can help target the reduction of socio-economic inequalities as laid out in the United Nations SDGs.

Ocean acidification, air pollution, rising sea levels and energy security are just some of the issues and negative externalities that the renewable energy industry can help to mitigate. At Blackwood, we believe that the potential to effect change through the power of communication is almost limitless. Blackwood believes that effective communication within and of the renewable energy industry, can have a major impact in mitigating these ever-increasing threats.

From small scale renewable energy outputs like home-installed solar panels and biomass boilers, to huge hydropower and geothermal plants, renewable energy has the potential to decarbonise up to 90% of the global energy supply by 2050. Our planet’s environment, as well as our global society embedded within, is dependent on this potential being fulfilled. However, we currently fall short of this, and it is predicted that by 2024 renewable energy will supply around 33% of electricity generation. This is undoubtedly progress as it represents a possible increase of 14% since 2015, but if the 2050 prediction is to be achieved, each individual, cooperation and government is responsible and accountable for enacting agency that leads to change, including Blackwood.

At Blackwood, we believe that the potential to effect change through the power of communication is almost limitless.

Clare Ritchie, Client Service Director

Blackwood has been involved in communication and design within the renewable energy sector since 2011, helping to provide a discourse for renewable energy that has appeared in 18 languages in over 40 countries. Blackwood’s long-standing partnership with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), including the creation of a report on the ‘Low carbon transition’, enabled Blackwood to become highly informed about renewable energy and sustainability topics. In particular, this report highlighted the role that the transition to renewable and low carbon energy sources can have in socio-economic terms, such as through job creation and the improvement of social equality and diversity.

Blackwood is proud to have produced material that highlights the importance of renewable energy for not just environmental preservation, but also for social development and equity. Core beliefs of intra- and intergenerational equity can be seen in Blackwood’s partnership with the Islamic Bank of Development (IsDB). Tasked with communicating the role of renewable energy in helping to reduce gender and economic inequalities through energy and job provision, Blackwood produced a series of impactful animations that showed that although statistically, women are more likely to suffer from the impacts of climate change, these impacts can be mitigated and reduced.

Communicating the multi-tier advantages of renewable energy is crucial, and Blackwood are well placed to expertly enhance this discourse, helping to spread the global mandate for renewable energy for both environmental and socio-economic protection and enhancement.
