When the people behind Europe’s largest railway and infrastructure project, Crossrail, approached us to create a communications and training tool to make the project more accessible for the younger generation, we went back to the drawing board – and our own childhoods – for inspiration.

Brief

Who doesn’t love Top Trumps? That was our thinking when Crossrail told us they needed a tool to take to schools to introduce young people to the scale of this world-class engineering project. They wanted a solution that would be versatile, that would capture children’s imaginations and create interest and energy around the South East’s huge infrastructure project.

Solution

Crossrail is a hugely complex project and it suited an information-led game to a tee. After all, there is no shortage of statistics around the project:

  • the route will run over 100km
  • there will be 40 Crossrail stations, including 10 new ones
  • Crossrail will bring an extra 1.5 million people to within 45 minutes of central London
  • an estimated 200 million annual passengers will use the network…

So we decided to produce a Crossrail version of the ever-popular Top Trumps game, exploring the big numbers and the opportunity for fun.

As well as producing the cards themselves, we came up with a z-card insert which fitted beautifully into the card pack. This insert offered more context to the reader and folded out to create an A3 poster including a map of the route as well as general statistics.

This was a great project to work on, bringing back a bit of nostalgia for us. Top Trumps is an eternally popular game, uniting people of all ages and demographics, and it was superb to see how well received it was by the client as well as the many schools where it was used.

Impact

Our Top Trumps packs caused a very positive stir when they were launched at an event for the top 250 industry leaders and partners. They provide a highly cost-effective option for the client, with the flexibility to be used in Crossrail’s own internal training, as well as at external roadshows and school events (the posters were a great teaching aid and perfect for classroom displays).

What’s more, the assets used in the game’s design could – and have – been re-used by the client in other formats.

In fact, so popular was this Top Trumps project that we were asked to produce a second edition.
